ABSTRACT

Data analysis utilizing run charts and statistical process control (SPC) charts is a mainstay of quality improvement (QI) work. These types of time series analyses allow QI teams to evaluate patterns in data that may not be apparent with pre- and postintervention analysis. A run chart is most useful at the onset of a project when data points may be limited; points can be added prospectively to monitor for changes. An SPC chart is needed to determine if the system is "out of control," indicating an instance of special cause variation, and is recommended for more robust data analysis. These charts are valuable tools in identifying patterns of change, but cannot indicate what caused the change. QI teams can further investigate significant patterns to identify the impact of interventions and promote continued change or sustainability. In this article, we will provide a practical guide to the basics of run and SPC charts, including how to create and interpret them. The reader can use the supplemental data tables to gain the skills needed to build their own charts with readily available software. Finally, we will review more specialized software options that can assist in creation of run and SPC charts.

ABSTRACT

This study aimed to investigate the perception of multiprofessional residents of a public hospital about the importance of oral care in the hospital setting. A cross-sectional, observational study of descriptive design was conducted with a convenience sample, including 63 residents of the Multiprofessional Integrated Residency Program in Hospital Care (RIMUSH) at the University Hospital Lauro Wanderley. The instrument used for data collection was an adapted questionnaire containing seven questions. For the analysis, residents were divided into two groups: group 1 (G1) included a dental surgeon (DS) in the multiprofessional team, and group 2 (G2) did not include a DS in the team. Most residents answered that dental evaluation of hospitalized patients was very important, and that systemic conditions, medications and oral health had a significant impact on recovery. However, G1 residents had better understanding of the duties of the DS in the team and of timely referral of hospitalized patients for a dental consultation, compared to G2. Residents of other Health Care courses realize the importance of Hospital Dentistry and understand that the presence of DSs in residency teams is acontributing factor to the qualification of these professionals, exchange of interprofessional knowledge and promotion of comprehensive care (AU).

ABSTRACT

Martin Heidegger, in his ontology, highlights a specific characteristic of the present moment that crosses human behavior, in philosophy, science, or common sense: the forgetfulness of being. The philosopher differentiates the current age from other historical ages. The contemporary historical horizon is unveiled by the challenge and the exploration, from the attempt to control and dominate events, to the mode of standing reserve and in terms of productivity. The philosopher clarifies that all this uprooting of the current man is linked to the forgetfulness of what is the most essential, namely, the existence itself. The question that guides this study is to investigate, via Heidegger's references and studies on suicide, to what extent the interpretation of voluntary death today is crossed by such forgetfulness. We intend to investigate to what extent the prevention actions developed by suicidology are crossed by such forgetfulness of the human's being and, in this way, they end up establishing relationships between being and entity in a consequent reduction to entity as an invariant and timeless. The path to investigate the issue will start by addressing, in greater detail, the existential analytics, the question concerning technique and the movement of forgetting the being pointed out by Heidegger to problematize the current scientific perspectives on suicide and its prevention to, then, propose a phenomenological and existential understanding about the referred phenomenon.(AU)

ABSTRACT

Its development depended on an autarchy (which financed, standardized, and maintains it) and on researchers teaching psychological assessment, who brought their expertise to the area so its parameters could be fully established. After two decades of its launch, Satepsi was the subject of articles, chapters, lives, and digital dialogues, which usually highlighted the Resolutions of the Federal Council of Psychology that normatize psychological evaluation and their impacts, such as the increase in the number of qualified Brazilian tests. This study aims to mention its construction in the light of the authors who experienced Satepsi in different functions and times, giving special attention to Projective Methods, whose history remains to be shown.(AU)

ABSTRACT

Aims: i) To describe population characteristics, frequency of oral mucosa pathologies, and risk factors for oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) in a Campaign for the Prevention and Early Diagnosis of Oral Cancer (CPEDOC), and ii) to establish concordance between professional clinical diagnosis of chronic mechanical irritation (CMI) and self-perception of trauma. Materials and methods: A retrospective descriptive study was performed using surveys of 640 patients who had participated in the CPEDOC conducted by the Dentistry Ser- vice at the Hospital Alemán during 2016, 2017 and 2018. De- mographic, clinical and cognitive variables were described and analyzed, using chi-square for qualitative variables and ANOVA for quantitative variables, to compare campaign years. Concordance was studied between the professional clinical diagnosis of CMI and self-perceived trauma using the Kappa test, sensitivity and specificity. Results: Participants were predominantly older, with low consumption of tobacco and alcohol. The percentage of patients with potentially malignant disorders and oral cancer was 17.2%. Hospital posters and radio broadcasting were the main channels of information to patients. Self-perceived trauma did not agree with the professional clinical diagnosis of CMI. Self-perceived trauma sensitivity and specificity were 0.41 and 0.72, respectively. Conclusions: The level of participation in the CPEDOC by the groups at higher risk of OSCC was low, and the epide- miological profile of the participants did not generally coincide with the profile of patients with OSCC. Self-perception of trau- ma does not seem to be a reliable tool for the diagnosis of CMI (AU)

ABSTRACT

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: As an interdisciplinary field of research ethnopharmacology draws on methodologies and methods from a variety of disciplines. A range of ethnobotanical indices are frequently used to transform primary data obtained through field studies into statistical measures. These indices are claimed to serve as a proxy for efficacy or drug discovery (Fidelity Level 'FL') and to show the importance of botanical drugs and plants used as medicines (Relative Importance 'RI', Use Value 'UV' or Cultural Importance Index 'CI', Cultural Value Index 'CV', Relative Frequency of Citation 'RFC'). This is, however, doubtful, as these indices have not been developed by statisticians, nor by pharmacologists while a proof of concept is lacking. Moreover, the question whether a simple number can summarize the cultural value or importance of plants is not only mathematical but also epistemological. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The FL, RI, UV/CI, CV and the RFC are shortly reviewed. Their statistical rigour is explained and the relevance for ethnobotany, ethnopharmacology and drug discovery discussed. RESULTS: The effect of the sample size on the dispersal of data and the differential probability of botanical drugs being used for the different categories of use are not being considered by these indices. They lack statistical rigour and are simple percentage calculations. Moreover, important factors influencing plant use, such as the availability of pharmaceutical drugs, or the severity of diseases covered by the use-categories, are not accounted for. CONCLUSION: Especially unexperienced and young researchers may be ensnared by using ethnobotanical indices to describe their field data. However, the cultural value and importance of plants in general, and more specifically, of medicinal plants and botanical drugs cannot be summed up by numbers. The discussed indices encrypt parts of the primary data but fail to show the value or importance of plant use because the reasons for which plants are valued or important to people are far more complex than what the formulations of these indices suggest. The indices also lack the power to pinpoint plant species or botanical drugs for drug discovery that contextualized primary data has. Botanical drugs may be useful for a range of disorders or only for specific indications, according to their pharmacologic properties. Therefore, the exclusiveness of therapeutical applications (FL) does not serve as a proxy for effectiveness. The solution is to use and understand the contextualized primary data.

ABSTRACT

There is a tendency in Dentistry to incorporate less invasive methods of treatment. Therefore, since it has proven beneficial effects, it is believed that low-intensity laser therapy (LILT) can be a treatment option. The objective of this study is to outline the teaching pattern and perception of professors about their knowledge in the use of low -intensity laser therapy in Dentistry at the Federal University of Espírito Santo. In addition, it seeks to analyze the presence of Laser Therapy programs in the Dentistry Schools in Brazil. The research was carried out from an analytical, transversal and descriptive study. A questionnaire was applied to 44 professors of the course of Dentistry at the Federal University of Espírito Santo. From this study, it was found that 9% of all professors claimed to use the laser in some of the teaching activities. This percentage was justified by then due to the lack of financial resources to obtain the devices. It was observed that most of the professors had knowledge about the laser. According to 45.4% of then, this knowledge was acquired during the post-graduation. When evaluating the curricular structure of the courses of Dentistry at Brazilian Universities it was found that from the 461 in activity, 13 offer the disciplineof laser therapy. It can be concluded that there is a considerable level of knowledge about the laser among professors. However, there is little knowledge transmission in the different disciplines of the course studied (AU).

ABSTRACT

Brain tissue deformation resulting from head impacts is primarily caused by rotation and can lead to traumatic brain injury. To quantify brain injury risk based on measurements of kinematics on the head, finite element (FE) models and various brain injury criteria based on different factors of these kinematics have been developed, but the contribution of different kinematic factors has not been comprehensively analyzed across different types of head impacts in a data-driven manner. To better design brain injury criteria, the predictive power of rotational kinematics factors, which are different in (1) the derivative order (angular velocity, angular acceleration, angular jerk), (2) the direction and (3) the power (e.g., square-rooted, squared, cubic) of the angular velocity, were analyzed based on different datasets including laboratory impacts, American football, mixed martial arts (MMA), NHTSA automobile crashworthiness tests and NASCAR crash events. Ordinary least squares regressions were built from kinematics factors to the 95% maximum principal strain (MPS95), and we compared zero-order correlation coefficients, structure coefficients, commonality analysis, and dominance analysis. The angular acceleration, the magnitude and the first power factors showed the highest predictive power for the majority of impacts including laboratory impacts, American football impacts, with few exceptions (angular velocity for MMA and NASCAR impacts). ABSTRACT

Background: Currently, screening cut point (CP) calculated from an assay validation with replicates are applied to an immunogenicity study with nonreplicates, for which the antidrug antibodies rate is determined. IID treats the replicate of a sample as coming from another independent sample. AVE uses average results from each sample across runs but inter-assay variability is reduced. Therefore, we propose a random effect model (REM) for calculating CP. Materials & method: We investigate impact of noncompatibility design between validation and immunogenicity studies on CP and compare these methods. Conclusion: IID may not fit for use when replicates' variability dominates all sources of uncertainty. REM considers covariance structure of repeated measurements. CP by REM is smaller than that by IID but larger than that by AVE.

ABSTRACT

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Traditional pharmacopeias have been developed by multiple cultures and evaluated for efficacy and safety through both historical/empirical iteration and more recently through controlled studies using Western scientific paradigms and an increasing emphasis on data science methodologies for network pharmacology. Traditional medicines represent likely sources of relatively inexpensive drugs for symptomatic management as well as potential libraries of new therapeutic approaches. Leveraging this potential requires hard evidence for efficacy that separates science from pseudoscience. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We performed a review of non-Western medical systems and developed case studies that illustrate the epistemological and practical translative barriers that hamper their transition to integration with Western approaches. We developed a new data analytics approach, in silico convergence analysis, to deconvolve modes of action, and potentially predict desirable components of TM-derived formulations based on computational consensus analysis across cultures and medical systems. RESULTS: Abstraction, simplification and altered dose and delivery modalities were identified as factors that influence actual and perceived efficacy once a medicine is moved from a non-Western to Western setting. Case studies on these factors highlighted issues with translation between non-Western and Western epistemologies, including those where epistemological and medicinal systems drive markets that can be epicenters for zoonoses such as the novel Coronavirus. The proposed novel data science approach demonstrated the ability to identify and predict desirable medicinal components for a test indication, pain. CONCLUSIONS: Relegation of traditional therapies to the relatively unregulated nutraceutical industry may lead healthcare providers and patients to underestimate the therapeutic potential of these medicines. We suggest three areas of emphasis for this field: First, vertical integration and embedding of traditional medicines into healthcare systems would subject them to appropriate regulation and evidence-based practice, as viable integrative implementation mode. Second, we offer a new Bradford-Hill-like framework for setting research priorities and evaluating efficacy, with the goal of rescuing potentially valuable therapies from the nutraceutical market and discrediting those that are pseudoscience. Third, data analytics pipelines offer new capacity to generate new types of TMS-inspired medicines that are rationally-designed based on integrated knowledge across cultures, and also provide an evaluative framework against which to test claims of fidelity and efficacy to TMS made for nutraceuticals.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT Objective: To evaluate the epidemiological evidence, symptoms, and transmission routes of Coronavirus Disease 19 for clinical dental care. Material and Methods: PubMed, Embase, ISI, Scopus, Medicine have been used to search for articles until October 2020. Therefore, EndNote X9 was used to manage electronic resources. A 95% confidence interval (CI) effect size, random effect model, and the REML method were evaluated. Forty-one articles were found. In the first step of selecting studies, 40 studies were selected to review the abstracts. Finally, six studies were selected. Results: The effect size of symptoms of COVID-19 was fever: 92% (ES = 0.92, 95% CI 0.79-1.06), cough: 73% (ES = 0.73, 95% CI 0.59-0.88), headache: 8% (ES = 0.8, 95% CI 0.06-0.22), myalgia 13% (ES = 0.13, 95% CI 0.01-0.27) and nasal congestion 22% (ES = 0.22, 95% CI 0.06-0.39). The following recommendations are appropriate during COVID-19 for dental emergency management: personal protective equipment and hand cleanliness practices, personal protective equipment (PPE), preprocedural mouth rinse, single-use (disposable), cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) and periapical (PA) radiography, Rubber dam, sodium hypochlorite for root canal irrigation, disinfect inanimate surfaces, ultrasonic scaling instruments and airborne infection isolation. Conclusion: Fever should be used as the first sign in the diagnosis; dentists should measure the fever of all patients at the time of arrival and before any procedure and then ask about other symptoms.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT Objective: To determine the frequency of oral potentially malignant disorders and Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma (OSCC) and evaluate the consistency between their clinical and pathological features. Material and Methods: This retrospective study was conducted on records with a diagnosis of oral leukoplakia, oral erythroplakia, erythroleukoplakia, actinic cheilitis, lichen planus, and OSCC in the Pathology Department of Kerman dental school from September 1997 to September 2017. Data were analyzed in SPSS 21 at the significance level of ≤5%. Results: There were 378 cases of oral potentially malignant disorders and 70 cases of OSCC with a mean age of 46.82 ± 15.24 years. Buccal mucosa was the most frequent site, and lichen planus the most common lesion. Females were significantly older than males in leukoplakia and carcinoma in situ lesions. Clinical diagnosis and histopathology were consistent in 69.03% of cases. Conclusion: Clinical and histopathological diagnoses were consistent in 69.03% of records. The highest degree of clinical compliance with histopathology was observed in OSCC. Dentists should pay attention to oral potentially malignant disorders for early diagnosis to prevent their transformation to malignancy.

ABSTRACT

The initial colonization of the human microbiota is of paramount importance, playing a fundamental role in immunological, nutritional, metabolic, and neurological development. Premature and low-birth-weight newborns often need to remain hospitalized in intensive care units and often enteral trophic diet is limited due to the immaturity of the digestive system or the newborn's clinical status. In this context, breastfeeding is important for the newborn's development and for the initial colonization of the gastrointestinal tract. Furthermore, the administration of colostrum as oral immunotherapy has been described as a safe, viable and well-tolerable therapy for newborns. Therefore, this project evaluated the effect of administering breast milk, either through diet or administration of colostrum, on the development of the oral and intestinal microbiota of preterm newborns. A longitudinal and observational study was carried out, where 20 premature neonates were recruited for the analysis of the oral microbiota and 56 for the analysis of the intestinal microbiota. Samples of saliva and feces were collected from the newborns, and breast milk from the mothers of these newborns, and 16S rRNA gene sequencing was performed from these samples, in addition to the dosage of immunoglobulin A (IgA) in the feces of the newborns. For statistical analysis, SPSS and R Studio software were used, adopting a significance of 5% for the tests. Breast milk from mothers of premature newborns has a composition that changes over time, with an increase in Staphylococcus and Streptococcus and a decrease in Corynebacterium 1. Administration of colostrum has a beneficial effect on the oral microbiota, with an increase in genera such as Staphylococcus, Bifidobacterium and Bacteroides. Additionally, there is a difference in the intestinal microbiota when different proportions of breast milk are offered during the first week of life, in addition to higher levels of total IgA in stool samples from newborns who received higher proportions of breast mil

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT Objctive: To assess the soft tissue characteristics of Bangladeshi adults to formulate soft tissue 3D CT standards using Holdaway's (HA) and lip morphology (LM) analyses. Another aim of this study was to assess the gender dimorphism of Bangladeshi population. Material and Methods: One hundred and seventeen (Eighty-five men and Thirty-two women) Bangladeshi adults have obtained their computed tomography (CT) scan at the Radiology Department for normal diagnosis. Craniofacial deformities were undetected in all cases. The CT images were prepared by a 3D imaging programming software (Mimics 11.02 Materialise). Parameters from the identified landmark points were measured in 3D through this software. Results: Upper lip thickness (ULT) (vermillion UL-A point) measurement was significant in HA and in LM analyses, upper lip protrusion (ULP) (Ls to Sn-SPog) measurement has demonstrated significant difference among both genders, where p-value was less than 0.05. Mean measurements of Bangladeshi adults were relatively comparable except the face convexity (FC) when compared with the HA cephalometric soft tissue values. Conclusion: By using HA and LM analyses, 3D CT soft tissue standards were established for Bangladeshi adults. Measurements for all parameters have remained equivalent with the HA standard data apart from the FC measurement. This consequently may demonstrate that the Bangladeshi population retains a convex shape with a slight protrusive lip or retruded chin.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT Objective: To evaluate the efficacy of pre-cooling and the use of higher gauged needles in reducing pain during local anesthetic infiltration. Material and Methods: We conducted a split-mouth randomized controlled trial among 70 patients who require bilateral maxillary local anesthetic (LA) injections for dental treatment. After applying the topical anesthetic, each participant received four local anesthetic injections, two on buccal and two palatal sides. At each visit, the participants received one buccal and one palatal infiltration based on the randomization. On the buccal aspect, participants received LA with a 26G needle injection on one side (control) and a 31G needle (test) on the contralateral side. On the Palatal aspect, participants either received LA with a 31G needle on one side (control). In contrast, the opposite side was preceded by topical ice application (iced cotton swab) before LA with a 31G needle (test). Both the visits were spaced with a gap of 7-10 days based on the participants' feasibility. Participants were asked to rate the pain on a visual analog scale independently for buccal and palatal LA injections. Results: On the Buccal aspect, the mean pain scores were 2.74 ± 1.26 and 2.11 ± 1.26 for control and test groups, respectively (p=0.002). On the Palatal aspect, the mean pain scores were 4.14 ± 1.49 and 4.3 ± 1.80 for control and test groups, respectively (p=0.295). Conclusion: Significant lower pain scores were reported with higher gauge needles (31G) when compared to traditional (26G) needles on the buccal aspect. No significant difference was seen with pre-cooling the injection site on the palatal aspect when used with higher gauged needles (31G).
